Budapest tram accident involving Romanian child

Overview

In late August, a six-year-old boy was critically injured after being struck by a tram at Batthyány Square in Budapest. Emergency responders used hydraulic equipment to free the child from beneath the vehicle. Following surgery at Heim Pál Children's Hospital for life-threatening injuries, the boy was stabilized.

By mid-September, it was clarified that the child is Romanian. Following the accident, Hungarian doctors reportedly determined the child had “no hope of recovery” and was being kept alive by life-support machines. Disagreeing with the decision to disconnect the equipment, the family worked with a foundation to fly the child to Bucharest. He remains in critical but stable condition while requiring mechanical life support.
