Budapest transportation and infrastructure disruptions

Budapest is experiencing significant traffic disruptions due to a combination of planned events and infrastructure maintenance. The Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) has announced closures for a car-free weekend affecting Liberty Bridge, Vámház körút, and the Műegyetem embankment, which will also result in the suspension of tram lines 47, 48, and 49 on the Small Boulevard.

This car-free weekend coincides with large-scale national events, including Cultural Heritage Days and the National Open Markets Day. The Cultural Heritage Days offer approximately 500 free programs, providing public access to historic sites such as the Sándor Palace, the Hungarian Statistical Office, and various museums and castles. Additionally, the National Open Markets Day will be held at 26 locations, with 15 sites situated in Budapest, featuring tastings, concerts, and community programs.

Due to these overlapping events, BKK has advised commuters to utilize alternative routes, such as the metro and specific bus services, to navigate the road closures and tram suspensions.

Separately, long-term maintenance on the Erzsébet Bridge is scheduled to begin on September 21. The project, which involves repairing drainage, paving, and replacing expansion joints, is expected to last until November 15, 2026. These works will cause lane restrictions and ramp closures, necessitating diversions for several bus lines.
