Buenos Aires Recoleta Cemetery commercial tender
Overview
The Government of the City of Buenos Aires has initiated a public tender to lease a 24.54-square-meter unoccupied vault within the Recoleta Cemetery for a five-year concession. The project intends to convert the space into a commercial and gastronomic area offering specialty coffee, food, beverages, and a gift shop, alongside nighttime tourist tours.
Located in Section 17 near the Junín Street entrance, the site is situated near the tombs of historical figures such as Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, Bartolomé Mitre, and Ramón Castillo. The city has established a base monthly fee of 1.6 million pesos for the lease. Under the tender requirements, the concession excludes supermarkets, markets, and self-service formats. Additionally, bidders must propose a royalty of at least 20% of the gross income generated from nighttime tourism circuits and must maintain employee insurance with a coverage requirement of 27.5 million pesos in the event of death.
New details indicate the proposed nocturnal guided tours are intended to be cultural, educational, and recreational, focusing on the cemetery’s history, architecture, and funerary heritage. These tours are proposed to operate from Thursday to Sunday between 7:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.
The proposal has met with opposition from the Association of Friends of the Recoleta Cemetery (ADACRE). While the group expressed support for using the abandoned space as a cultural information center, they stated that gastronomic activities are “inappropriate for the site,” even under a take-away model.
