Buenos Aires SAME emergency service expansion
Overview
The City of Buenos Aires has inaugurated a new 24-hour base for the Emergency Medical Care System (SAME) in the Palermo neighborhood. Situated under the Illia Highway, the facility is the eighth base opened under Mayor Jorge Macri’s administration.
The expansion is part of a decentralization strategy designed to reduce emergency response times in high-traffic and densely populated areas. The city’s emergency network now comprises 32 bases, including eight hospital-based stations and 24 extra-hospital stations.
The SAME system manages approximately 250,000 calls annually, supported by a staff of 1,254 professionals and a fleet consisting of 131 ambulances, 11 motorcycles, and one helicopter. Specialized services within the network include units for intensive care, neonatology, and a psychiatric division for mental health emergencies in public spaces.
