Bulgaria marks 123rd Ilinden‑Preobrazhenie uprising
Overview
Throughout July and August 2026, Bulgarian towns held ceremonies to mark the 123rd anniversary of the 1903 Ilinden‑Preobrazhenie uprising.
In Bansko on 18 July, dozens of residents and visitors gathered at the B’nderitsa campsite for a large‑scale historical reenactment. Participants wore period costumes, displayed authentic weapons and staged mock battles, while Mayor Boyko Vankov stressed the mountain’s role in preserving the rebels’ memory. The event concluded with musical performances that added a festive tone.
Plovdiv hosted a solemn ceremony on 2 August in front of the monument to Bulgarians from Eastern and Western Thrace and Macedonia. Organized by the municipal cultural calendar, the program featured a military band, an honour guard from the Special Operations Command and representatives of local historical societies. Hosted by Zlato Pavlov, Dr Milen Mihov of the Macedonian Scientific Institute delivered the official address. Attendees laid wreaths, observed a minute of silence and reflected on the uprising, which involved roughly 26 000 rebels fighting Ottoman forces.
Kyustendil also commemorated the anniversary at the monument to Todor Alexandrov. Mayor Ognyan Atanasov and municipal officials laid wreaths, observed a minute of silence and highlighted the city’s historic role as a staging ground for revolutionary bands. The celebration continued with a concert by the Gotsé Delchev Ensemble and a folk evening in nearby Gyueshevo, underscoring the uprising’s lasting symbolic importance for Bulgarian national freedom and unity.
