Bulgaria maritime minehunter acquisition

Overview

Bulgaria has initiated a program to acquire seven minehunter ships from Belgium and the Netherlands to enhance maritime security and de-mining capabilities in the Black Sea. This acquisition follows a July NATO summit agreement where Bulgaria, Romania, and Turkey pledged to expand a joint de-mining task force to address threats from naval mines.

The procurement involves two separate agreements: three ships will be purchased directly from the Netherlands, while four others will be transferred through a joint Belgian-Dutch agreement. Bulgaria is responsible for funding the restoration and technical upgrades required to ensure the vessels meet NATO operational readiness standards.

By October, Bulgaria expects to receive the first of these specialized vessels from the Netherlands. The delivery includes necessary logistical equipment and spare parts to support the Bulgarian Navy’s efforts to ensure safer navigation for Black Sea coastal states.
