Bulgarian presidential engagement on EU policy

Bulgarian President Iliana Jotova has engaged in discussions regarding European Union priorities, specifically focusing on the 2028–2034 Multiannual Financial Framework and regional security.

During a meeting with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, Jotova raised concerns that the proposed new philosophy for fund distribution might disadvantage less developed member states. She also emphasized the need for strengthened EU security due to conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, noting the strategic importance of the Black Sea. Discussions also covered migration policy, specifically border protection and repatriation.

Following these talks, Jotova commented on European sovereignty and a proposal for a new security council that would include non-EU members such as Canada, Norway, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom. While supporting strategic autonomy, she questioned the lack of a mandate from all member states for such a council, as well as potential issues regarding its leadership and funding. Regarding the upcoming budget, she noted that Bulgaria could benefit from the competitiveness pillar if projects are properly prepared.
