Bulgarian preventive healthcare initiatives

Overview

Bulgaria has implemented several healthcare initiatives focused on preventive medicine and increased accessibility. In Burgas, approximately 300 children participated in medical screenings under the ‘Child Health’ program, a collaboration between the ‘N. I. Pirgov’ University Multiprofile Hospital and the Sofia Medical College of the Bulgarian Medical Union. During these consultations, specialists identified various conditions, including scoliosis, kidney cysts, and myopia linked to screen device usage.

Expanding on these efforts, the Bulgarian Ministry of Health has deployed mobile medical clinics to 17 regions to conduct 1,435 preventive examinations and tests. This nationwide initiative, ordered by Minister Katya Ivkova, targets vulnerable communities and families in difficult social situations. The program includes obstetric-gynecological examinations, pediatric screenings, immunizations, fluorograph examinations, ultrasounds, and laboratory tests. The initiative is part of the National Action Plan 2024–2027 and aligns with national strategies for equality and inclusion.
