Bulgarian tourist deaths in Greece

Overview

In late July 2024, two elderly Bulgarian tourists died in separate incidents at different beaches in Alexandroupoli, Greece. Following the discovery of the unconscious victims, local lifeguards provided first aid before they were transported to a general hospital, where they were declared dead. Greek coast guard authorities ordered necropsies to determine the causes of death.

In August 2026, another Bulgarian national, a 65-year-old woman, died after being pulled unconscious from the sea at Ammolofoi beach in Kavala. Despite resuscitation efforts by lifeguards and emergency rescuers, she was pronounced dead at the hospital. The Central Port Authority of Kavala has initiated a preliminary investigation and ordered an autopsy.
