Burkina Faso AES biometric identity card rollout

Overview

In Burkina Faso, the National Identification Office (ONI) has begun decentralizing the issuance of the new AES biometric identity card (CIB-AES). Initial efforts included a mission in the commune of Niaogho, Boulgou province, where a specialized agent was stationed at the local gendarmerie to manage enrollment.

This initiative expanded to Koudougou in September 2026. According to ONI Director General Arzouma Daouda Parfait Louré, these proximity actions aim to bring identification services closer to the population to facilitate administrative procedures and social participation. The Koudougou operations served as a prelude to the VII edition of International Identity Day.
