Burkina Faso agropastoral campaign and food security
Overview
Burkina Faso’s Minister of Agriculture, Ismaël Sombié, has been conducting inspections and inaugurations as part of the 2026-2027 agropastoral campaign to bolster national food sovereignty.
In the Gulmu region, the Minister monitored the construction of a modern slaughterhouse in Fada N’Gourma. This project, part of a ‘Zero livestock export on foot’ operation, has reached a physical execution rate of 58.34% and is intended to enhance livestock transformation.
Following this, Sombié inaugurated the ‘Paaspanga’ unit in Korsimoro, a semi-industrial facility managed by the National Food Security Stock Management Society (SONAGESS). The unit aims to process at least one ton of raw materials daily to produce fortified flours and cereal bars. To further reduce post-harvest losses for vegetable producers, the facility features four cold rooms with a total capacity of 200 tonnes.
The Minister also visited the resettled village of Forgui in the Koulsé region, where 330 farmers are utilizing community-based irrigation to maintain rice production despite localized droughts. Additional inspections were carried out at an agro-pastoral farm in Sandbontenga and various rice perimeters in the Bam province to assess ongoing food sovereignty efforts.
