Burkina Faso economic and social development financing

Overview

Burkina Faso has initiated several measures to bolster economic autonomy and social resilience. The government approved the ratification of $120 million in financing from the International Development Association to support the Economic Empowerment Project for Poor and Vulnerable Households for Resilience and Adaptive Social Protection. This five year program aims to organize 120,000 households into community cooperatives and invest in logistics, such as warehouses and heavy vehicles.

Following discussions between the Minister Delegate for the Budget and an International Monetary Fund delegation regarding national economic outlooks and strategic financing for agriculture and solar energy, the country reached a service level agreement with the IMF. This agreement seeks to finalize reviews of the Extended Credit Facility and the Resilience and Sustainability Facility. Pending board approval in early 2027, these reviews are expected to unlock approximately 38.6 billion FCFA and 13.2 billion FCFA respectively.

Economic projections indicate real GDP growth of 4.4% in 2026 and 4.8% in 2027, driven by the gold sector and agricultural investments. The government aims to maintain a fiscal deficit of approximately 2.7% of GDP in 2026.
