Burkina Faso higher education development

Burkina Faso is experiencing significant advancements in its higher education sector, characterized by the stabilization of academic calendars and improved regional standing.

Efforts to normalize university programs have seen a steady increase, rising from 81.31% in October 2024 to 99.69% by late August 2026. The Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation reported that 320 out of 321 monitored programs are currently up to date, with the final pharmacy program at Joseph KI-ZERBO University expected to conclude its normalization by September 21, 2026. The ministry intends to achieve 100% normalization for the 2026-2027 academic year.

In addition to schedule stabilization, the country has secured the top position in the African and Malagasy Council for Higher Education (CAMES) member rankings for the second consecutive year. This achievement follows a session in Equatorial Guinea where Burkina Faso saw a 95.81% success rate, with 412 candidates admitted to academic and scientific lists. These academic successes are being supported by infrastructure modernization, such as the completion of a new 1,200-seat amphitheater at Nazi Boni University.
