Calgary water infrastructure development

Overview

The City of Calgary is progressing with the Bearspaw South Feeder Main replacement project. Stage A microtunnelling, covering 3.7 kilometres between the Shaganappi Pump Station and 73 Street NW, is complete. Stage B, which utilizes open-cut excavation in Bowness, is approximately 40 per cent complete.

A planned system shutdown in mid-October is required to connect the new feeder main to the existing network. This shutdown may lead to Stage 4 outdoor water restrictions and indoor conservation measures. The new pipe is expected to be fully commissioned by mid-November.

In support of broader water reliability in northern Calgary, the Canadian federal government has committed $29 million to the North Calgary Water Servicing project via the Build Communities Strong Fund. This funding contributes to a larger $533 million infrastructure initiative. The first $123 million phase includes constructing feeder mains and upgrading the Top Hill Reservoir, Big Hill East Reservoir, and Mountain View Pump Station, which is expected to provide an additional 30 million liters of water once operational next year.
