Cambodian economic development and investment
Overview
Cambodia is pursuing several strategic initiatives to enhance its economic competitiveness and attract foreign direct investment. Through partnerships with international organizations like GIZ, the country has launched projects aimed at improving enterprise productivity and entrepreneurship through 2030. The government is also focusing on administrative reforms to reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks and streamline regulatory procedures for foreign investors.
Bilateral trade efforts are prominent, notably with Vietnam, where leaders are working toward a $20 billion trade target and the development of synchronized industrial corridors in sectors such as agro-industry, logistics, and clean energy.
In the first nine months of 2026, Cambodia secured $5.92 billion in approved investment projects across 382 developments, which are projected to create approximately 217,000 jobs. While total capital and project counts saw a decrease compared to the previous year due to global economic challenges, China remains the primary foreign investor, contributing over half of the total funds. Additionally, new investment agreements were finalized in the Kampot Fujian Special Economic Zone to establish further operations in the region.
