Canadian defense drone procurement expansion

Overview

The Canadian government is expanding its procurement of unmanned systems through the Defence Drone Initiative (DDI), which focuses on cybersecurity, supply chain security, and the protection of sensitive technologies.

Volatus Aerospace has secured a five-year framework agreement to supply tactical Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) drone systems to the Canadian Armed Forces. Deliveries are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026.

In addition to Volatus, the French manufacturer Drone Volt has qualified as a supplier under the DDI. This qualification covers unmanned vehicles and systems, systems engineering and integration, and innovation and experimentation, allowing the company to bid on contracts for the Canadian Armed Forces and the Canadian Coast Guard.
