Canoga Park shooting investigation

Overview

On August 23, 2026, a gunman opened fire on a parked vehicle in an alley in Canoga Park, Los Angeles. The attack left a 22-year-old pregnant woman in critical condition and wounded a second woman. At the time of the initial report, the Los Angeles Police Department was investigating whether the shooting was a random act or a targeted attack, noting that “it’s too early to say, but we have some good leads.”

By early September, authorities confirmed that the pregnant victim, Adriana Jimenez, had died after being declared brain dead, resulting in the death of her unborn child. Her sister, Maria Fernanda Jimenez, survived the shooting but was left unable to speak due to a neck wound.

Investigators identified the attack as targeted. Police arrested 30-year-old Walter Rodriguez Garcia, who was reportedly known to the family and had a romantic relationship with an occupant of the vehicle. Garcia has been charged with three counts of attempted murder.
