Carnival Freedom ship repairs and upgrades

Overview

The cruise ship Carnival Freedom entered the Chantier Naval de Marseille in early September for a month-long repair and reconstruction project. The primary focus was the reconstruction of the vessel’s iconic whale-tail funnel, which had been destroyed by a lightning-induced fire in March 2024.

By mid-October, the dry dock period was completed, involving both structural and interior upgrades. The new funnel was designed as a shorter version of the signature style to allow the ship to access ports previously restricted by height limitations. Other modifications included interior renovations to the casino, retail spaces, and arcade, as well as accessibility improvements.

The ship is scheduled to return to service with a Mediterranean cruise departing from Barcelona, eventually arriving at Port Canaveral, Florida, by late October.
