Carolina Wilga Australian Outback survival story

Carolina Wilga, a German backpacker, survived a twelve-day ordeal in the Australian Outback after a vehicle accident in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia. The incident occurred in late June 2025 when Wilga, then 26, steered her Mitsubishi Delica van into a fence to avoid what she perceived as oncoming lights while traveling from Beacon to Perth. The crash caused her vehicle to go down an embankment.

Following the accident, Wilga abandoned her van and wandered the wilderness without shoes, a mobile phone, or survival equipment. She likely suffered a concussion and experienced hallucinations, such as seeing ‘stars falling from the sky’. To manage panic and the extreme cold, she credited her yoga training, meditation, and breathing techniques. She also noted that thoughts of her family provided the motivation to continue despite hunger, thirst, and freezing temperatures.

Her disappearance prompted an intensive search and rescue mission that drew international attention to the town of Beacon. Wilga has since documented her experience in a German-language memoir titled ‘Dem Outback entkommen; Mein Überlebenskampf in der australischen Wildnis’ (Escape from the Outback; My fight for survival in the Australian wilderness). The book is scheduled for release in Germany on September 4, 2026, with no current plans for an English translation.
