Castro municipal public security program

Overview

The Castro Municipal Government has implemented the ‘Castro Segura’ program to enhance public security through significant financial investment and fleet expansion. Initial efforts included a R$ 1.7 million investment to deliver five Renault Duster vehicles, four Suzuki 350 motorcycles, and a mobile base van to the Municipal Guard, alongside the hiring of 18 new personnel.

Following these investments, which have exceeded R$ 4 million in total, the municipality reported a decrease in crime rates. Military Police data indicated that between January and July 2026, robberies fell by 18% and threats decreased by 26% compared to the previous year. Homicide rates also declined from 13 cases in 2023 to two cases by August 2026.

Mayor Reinaldo Cardoso noted that the strategy relies on integrated cooperation between the Municipal Guard, Military Police, and Civil Police. Future objectives for the program include establishing fixed Municipal Guard presences in the Abapã and Socavão regions and conducting a public examination to hire an additional 14 guards.
