Catalan Book Week in Barcelona

The 44th edition of the Catalan Book Week (Setmana del Llibre en Català) launched in Barcelona at Passeig de Lluís Companys, running through September 27. Organized under the slogan ‘Molt per veure, molt per llegir’ (Much to see, much to read), the event serves as a major showcase for the Catalan-language publishing sector.

The scale of the fair has expanded to include 332 exhibitors and over 350 activities. During the opening, writer Biel Mesquida delivered an inaugural speech characterizing the Catalan book as a ‘tool for national salvation’ and a ‘vaccine against annihilation,’ highlighting literature’s role in defending Catalan culture and language against perceived threats.

Andorra continues its significant participation with a dedicated stand showcasing approximately 240 titles from Andorran and Pyrenean authors and publishers. The Andorran delegation comprises the Government, the Association of Andorran Publishers, and the Association of Pyrenean Books. Parallel literary discussions, such as Pau Vidal’s presentation of ‘Sortir a guanyar’ at Ramon Llull University, have also emphasized the importance of linguistic combat and the civic responsibility to support the Catalan language.
