Catalan diplomatic mission to Ukraine

Overview

Salvador Illa, President of the Generalitat, conducted an official visit to Kyiv to demonstrate Catalonia’s support for Ukraine and discuss reconstruction efforts. As the first regional president to visit since the 2022 Russian invasion, Illa traveled with a delegation including Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni. The mission included a stop in Warsaw to meet with the Council for Cooperation between Poland and Ukraine. During the visit, the Barcelona City Council delivered firefighting vehicles and equipment to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.

Following the initial visit, Illa met with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha to reaffirm commitments to humanitarian aid and Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. Discussions expanded to include cooperation in the energy and health sectors to prepare for winter, as well as support for using frozen Russian assets for EU aid. Additionally, the President met with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) to formalize an 800,000 euro contribution.
