Catalan Eix Transversal railway development

Overview

The Generalitat de Catalunya has officially launched a tender for the first phase of the ‘Eix Transversal Ferroviari’ study. Managed by the public company Ifercat, this phase focuses on the stretch between Lleida, Igualada, and Martorell, with an estimated cost of 1.5 million euros and a duration of over two years.

The proposed network, expected to exceed 250 km, features a double branch: one running from Lleida to Igualada, then splitting toward Martorell, a station in the Vallès region, and Barcelona-Sagrera, and another running from Igualada through Manresa and Vic to Girona. While the Ministry of Transport views the axis as a high-speed line, the regional government intends for it to also accommodate freight trains to reduce dependence on the Mediterranean Corridor.

As part of the development, studies propose a new intermodal passenger station in the Vallès region to facilitate transfers between Renfe’s Rodalies R8 line, FGC services, and high-speed AVE trains. Rubí and Sant Cugat, specifically near Volpelleres and Hospital General, have been identified as feasible locations. The plan aims to ensure high-speed trains stop at least once in every county the line traverses. The broader study is expected to last approximately 28 months, with construction not anticipated before 2030.
