Catholic Church appeals for global peace

Overview

Catholic leadership has issued several calls for global peace and an end to conflict. In early September, the Archbishop of Palermo, Monsignor Corrado Lorefice, delivered a homily at the Sanctuary of Monte Pellegrino addressing the ‘inhumanity of ongoing wars’ and the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean. Following this, Pope Leo XIV issued a global appeal for the Catholic Church to pray the Rosary throughout October to seek peace.

On October 1, the Pope joined approximately 700 to 1,300 children and families at the Grotto of Lourdes in the Vatican Gardens to launch the ‘One Million Children Praying the Rosary’ campaign. Organized by the pontifical foundation Aid to the Church in Need (ACN), the initiative aims to unite schools and parishes worldwide to create a spiritual chain of approximately 50 million Hail Marys.

During an Angelus prayer on October 4, Pope Leo XIV reiterated his appeal for peace, specifically calling for an end to conflicts in the Holy Land and the protection of innocent victims. He encouraged the faithful to follow the example of the children in the ACN initiative to seek divine intervention for global harmony.

Marking the eighth centenary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi, the Pope reflected on the saint’s legacy of fraternal love and his role in ‘repairing’ the Church. He emphasized that the Church is built or damaged by individual choices, using the parable of the vineyard to illustrate this point. He also announced an upcoming synodal meeting at the Vatican with leaders of Eastern Catholic Churches and various episcopal conferences to discuss the role of families and new generations, marking the tenth anniversary of the apostolic exhortation ‘Amoris Laetitia’.
