CATL LFP battery technology developments
Overview
CATL has introduced new lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technologies targeting both electric vehicles and stationary energy storage.
In late August, the company unveiled the Shenxing 3, a third-generation LFP battery designed for ultra-fast charging. According to Chief Scientist Wu Kai, the company is shifting its LFP strategy from increasing energy density toward maximizing charging and discharging speeds. The Shenxing 3 is capable of a full charge in 6 minutes and 27 seconds.
By mid-September, CATL expanded its LFP offerings by commercializing large 587 Ah cells specifically for stationary energy storage systems. These prismatic cells, priced at approximately 435 yuan per kWh, offer high capacity per unit, allowing for significant energy density in storage applications compared to smaller cylindrical or unified cell formats.
