Cattle smuggling operations in Malaysia
Overview
Malaysian authorities have conducted operations to intercept the illegal smuggling and transport of cattle.
In late September, police in Tanah Merah, Kelantan, seized 44 cattle valued at RM211,200 during ‘Op Taring Wawasan Kelantan’. Officers observed individuals moving livestock from the direction of the Golok River. Two suspects were detained in a lorry, and they reportedly claimed to be working for a Thai national to transport the animals to Negeri Sembilan. The case was referred to the Bukit Bunga Customs Department.
Following this, authorities in Perak intercepted a truck attempting to transport 63 live cattle from Kelantan toward the Klang Valley via the Cameron Highlands route. The interception occurred on the North-South Expressway after a week of intelligence gathering. The driver lacked necessary authorization documents, and the case is being investigated under the Animals Act 1953.
