CBF refereeing error admissions

Overview

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) Refereeing Commission has issued admissions regarding officiating mistakes in recent matches.

In September, the CBF acknowledged a refereeing error during a Brasileirão match between Botafogo and Red Bull Bragantino. The commission determined that the red card issued to striker Wallace Yan for violent conduct was unjustified, as there was no “excessive force” despite irregular arm use.

In October, the commission identified further errors during the Flamengo versus Fluminense derby. The review concluded that Erick Pulgar should have received a red card for a violent challenge and that a penalty should have been awarded to Fluminense following a foul by Alex Sandro. While the commission noted the VAR acted correctly by not intervening in the penalty situation due to its “interpretative nature,” they maintained the on-field official failed to call the foul.
