Cemetery desecration and deaths in Honduras and Panama
Overview
Reports have emerged regarding grave desecration, theft, and vandalism in cemeteries across Honduras and Panama. In Honduras, incidents include the theft of iron structures from approximately 50 graves in Choluteca and increased vandalism in Chiriquí, Panama, where coffins were reportedly broken open to search for valuables.
In the Copán region of Honduras, specific incidents involving deceased individuals have been documented. In Dolores, a family reported that an unidentified person removed a man’s body from his coffin and set it on fire. This was followed by a report from Concepción, Copán, where two men were found dead and burned inside the Las Acuntas village cemetery. While local residents have speculated on potential links to criminal gang activity, authorities have not officially confirmed such connections.
Additionally, two unidentified individuals were found dead in the Las Cañeras sector of El Ojochal, Marcovia, on October 30, 2026. National Police are investigating these separate incidents.
