Central American firearm destruction and security measures
Overview
In Costa Rica, President Laura Fernández Delgado oversaw the destruction of 9,372 firearms at the National Arsenal. This operation, managed by the Ministry of Public Security, targeted state-owned weapons deemed obsolete or in poor condition, as well as 53 seized weapons. The initiative aims to modernize police equipment and clear storage space for new procurement.
In Honduras, the Armed Forces destroyed 2,138 inoperable firearms and 37 components at the Logistics Support Command facilities. This process was conducted with assistance from the Organization of American States through its Weapons and Ammunition Control Assistance Program. Alongside weapon disposal, the Honduran military implemented security checkpoints at major exits from Tegucigalpa, involving inspections of vehicles for firearms, prohibited substances, and tattoos associated with terrorist organizations.
