Central bank responses to AI and inflation

Overview

During IMF and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok, central bank leaders addressed the dual challenges of inflation and the economic implications of artificial intelligence.

Federal Reserve official Kevin Warsh characterized the AI boom as the “most consequential economic shift of his lifetime.” While noting that AI is expected to enhance productivity and generate national wealth, Warsh and other officials warned that the massive capital requirements for AI infrastructure could create a demand shock, exerting upward pressure on inflation and complicating monetary policy.

Warsh later elaborated that while AI could cause short-term inflationary pressures due to high demand and massive investments, its long-term impact on the real economy is expected to be positive. He cautioned that the transition may be “bumpy” as market structures and labor market impacts remain uncertain. His remarks contributed to a shift in market sentiment, easing fears of further interest rate hikes and leading to a decreased probability of an October rate hike in the futures market.

Additionally, the International Monetary Fund cautioned that if AI investments fail to meet expectations, it could trigger market corrections and pose risks to global financial stability. Meanwhile, Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda signaled a commitment to maintaining core inflation near the 2% target through continued interest rate adjustments.
