Central European cycling infrastructure developments

Overview

Developments in regional cycling infrastructure across Central Europe show a mix of new completions and maintenance issues.

In the Czech Republic and Austria, a new 4-kilometer cross-border cycling path was opened between Vyšší Brod and Reichenthal. Funded by the European Union’s Interreg Austria-Czech Republic program, the project restores a historical connection and features an autonomous ‘cyklopoint’ in Vyšší Brod that uses renewable energy to charge electronics.

In the Krkonoše region of the Czech Republic, a 1.6-kilometer path connecting Jilemnice and Martinice has been completed to provide a safe alternative to Class II roads. However, in Trebišov, Slovakia, a recently opened three-kilometer asphalt path has experienced significant structural failure, including large cracks and a hole reaching a depth of 86 centimeters. Local authorities are seeking an expert assessment and preparing a complaint against the contractor.
