Central European municipal housing initiatives

Municipalities in Slovakia and the Czech Republic are implementing various strategies to increase the supply of affordable rental housing.

In Slovakia, local governments are advancing specific construction projects. In Levoča, a development of 30 modern units on Viktor Greschika Street is progressing toward an expected completion in August 2027, supported by ministry subsidies and state loans. In Banská Bystrica, the city is preparing to build 23 new apartments on Ďumbierska Street to address a significant shortage, noting that some applicants have been on waiting lists since 2012.

In the Czech Republic, initiatives include architectural innovation and legislative proposals. A multi-story wooden residential project in Žďár nad Sázavou has been completed as a model for affordable urban living. Additionally, the Pirate Party has proposed tax reforms to incentivize municipalities to support new construction. The proposal suggests providing local governments with one-time payments per square meter of completed residential floor area to help offset the infrastructure costs associated with new developments.
