Central European train derailments

On 1 August 2026 a passenger train derailed near Rajci, Slovakia, when three axles left the rails at Konská station. No injuries were reported and traffic was halted while Železnice Slovenskej republiky cleared the line.

The same day a freight train near Most na Soči, Slovenia, derailed after a switch was moved, sending two wagons onto a parallel track and damaging three private cars. No one was hurt; the incident is also being investigated as possible sabotage.

Police in the Kranj area discovered a parked car containing the bodies of a man and a woman, both shot dead. The homicide investigation is ongoing and unrelated to the rail incidents.

A separate helicopter collision occurred during a rescue operation in eastern Slovakia, killing one crew member and leaving the second missing; authorities are conducting a joint aviation and emergency‑services inquiry.

Slovenian police have intensified speed‑control operations on high‑risk road sections, reporting 2,005 speed‑related crashes this year, 23 deaths and more than 1,200 injuries. Security patrols and speed checks have been expanded across the region as rail operators continue track clearance and service restoration while sabotage probes remain open.
