Cessna SkyCourier deployment in South America
Overview
The Paraguayan Air Force is integrating a Cessna SkyCourier C-408 into its fleet to improve emergency response, humanitarian assistance, and strategic transport capabilities. Funded by Itaipú Binacional, the twin-engine turboprop is the first of its kind to enter military service in Latin America.
The aircraft is designed for versatility, allowing for rapid reconfiguration between passenger, cargo, and medical evacuation modes. Specifically, it can accommodate up to four stretchers for medical missions, facilitating patient transport from remote and indigenous regions.
As of October 2026, the arrival of the C-408, acquired for approximately $11.3 million, coincides with the completion of a larger $105 million investment in airspace surveillance. This broader modernization includes the delivery of the final A-29 Super Tucano from a six-plane batch purchased from the Brazilian firm Embraer. An official reception ceremony in Luque is expected to be led by President Santiago Peña and Defense Minister Óscar González.
While the Paraguayan acquisition focuses on state and military utility, the aircraft is also seeing deployment in the region for commercial purposes, such as the Brazilian airline Azul integrating the model to serve smaller communities via its subsidiary, Azul Conecta.
