CFE energy infrastructure and service developments in Baja
Overview
The Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) has undertaken several infrastructure and service initiatives in the Baja California region. Initially, the utility operationalized the Wisteria 93930-Herradura transmission line, a 135-kilometer, 230-kilovolt project connecting Mexicali and Tecate. Described as one of the region’s most significant transmission projects in 33 years, the line aims to increase electricity transport capacity and reliability for over 1.2 million residents.
Following this, electrification efforts expanded to include the connection of 198 new services in the El Olivo neighborhood of San Quintín, benefiting approximately 792 residents through a collaboration between the CFE and the Government of Baja California.
Concurrently, energy concerns have emerged in Baja California Sur. Federal Deputy Francisco “Pancho” Pelayo Covarrubias has called for the implementation of the 1F electricity tariff to alleviate the financial burden on families facing high temperatures. He also noted that the region’s autonomous power system, which is not connected to the national grid, contributes to frequent blackouts.
