Overview

The Romanian Railway Passenger Company (CFR Călători) faced a potential service shutdown due to a prolonged delay in the approval of its 2026 budget. The railway workers' union federation (FNFMCV) reported that 257 days had passed without a finalized budget, warning that the lack of funding threatened essential operations, including electricity, diesel, repairs, and employee wages. The union indicated that while the Ministry of Transport had completed its duties, the process was stalled within the Ministry of Finance.

In response to these concerns, interim Transport Minister Radu Miruță provided assurances that CFR Călători trains would not stop operating and that the budget would be approved. Miruță stated that the ministry would only approve budgets that reflect “financial reality” rather than union requests lacking sufficient coverage. He added that the ministry is currently analyzing subsidies to ensure they prioritize passenger benefit over funding empty train runs.
