CFR Cluj financial crisis and insolvency
Overview
The Romanian football club CFR Cluj is experiencing severe financial instability, having officially entered insolvency on August 20, 2026. The club has accumulated debts estimated at approximately 32 million euros, resulting in the loss of several key players due to unpaid salaries.
In an attempt to address these debts and transition ownership, Swiss businessman Hendrik Klein was introduced by owner Ioan Varga as a potential investor and new president. Klein’s proposed strategic plan focused on football performance, technology, and financial sustainability. However, Klein reportedly disappeared from the organization shortly after his introduction; the club’s judicial administrator, Răzvan Zăvăleanu, stated he has had no contact with Klein since his first few days.
While the club currently sustains itself through internal production and loans from Varga, former coach Ioan Andone has expressed pessimism regarding the club’s future. A reorganization plan is expected to be approved in early 2027 to determine the club’s direction.
On October 29, 2026, the Cluj Specialized Tribunal ordered the club to pay 107,688.16 euros in compensation to two former players, Andre Campos Moreira and Bruno Xavier Almeida Carvalho Costa. This ruling follows the unilateral termination of their contracts by the judicial administrator, Răzvan Zăvăleanu, following the insolvency filing. While the court rejected attempts to annul the terminations, it ruled the players are entitled to damages. Moreira is owed 43,333.33 euros, while Costa is to receive 64,354.83 euros. The termination may offer long-term relief, as the combined salaries for these two players would have totaled approximately 624,000 euros over 24 months.
