Challenges facing Mexican livestock producers

Overview

Livestock producers in Mexico are navigating environmental recovery alongside emerging biological and criminal threats. In Baja California Sur, recent rainfall has provided relief from a two-year drought, helping to recharge aquifers and recover grazing lands in municipalities such as La Soledad, Todos Santos, El Triunfo, and El Pescadero.

In addition to pest management, producers in Zacatecas are facing significant economic pressure from organized crime. Ranchers report widespread extortion, including demands for ‘floor rights’ payments ranging from 500 pesos for small livestock to 2,000 pesos per head of cattle.
