Charité Berlin hospital cyberattack
Overview
The Charité university hospital in Berlin confirmed a cyberattack on its web servers that resulted in the theft of personal contact information. The breach affected employees, students, and external contacts who used web contact forms. Stolen data included names, email addresses, and potentially organizational affiliations, though the hospital stated that sensitive medical records were not affected and clinical operations continued.
As the situation developed, the scale of the breach was reported to involve approximately 140,000 individuals. This included 46,000 staff and students, 1,500 newsletter subscribers, and 90,000 contact form users. While the hospital maintained that specialized health data was not stolen, it noted that some users may have included medical information within free-text contact fields. In response, the institution isolated affected servers, strengthened security measures, and filed a criminal complaint with authorities.
