Charlyn Corral wins Gerd Müller Trophy at Ballon d'Or gala

Overview

Mexican forward Charlyn Corral, playing for Pachuca, became the first Mexican player to receive an individual award at a Ballon d'Or ceremony. She was awarded the female Gerd Müller Trophy in London, recognizing her as the season’s top goalscorer.

Reports on her scoring statistics vary slightly, with one noting 49 goals in 49 matches and another citing 43 goals and 11 assists in 46 matches. During the ceremony at the London Palladium, Corral shared the spotlight with Harry Kane, who received the men’s Gerd Müller Trophy. In her acceptance speech, Corral highlighted the growth of women’s football in Mexico and acknowledged compatriot Scarlett Camberos, who finished 21st in the Ballon d'Or rankings.

Following the event, the 35-year-old striker noted that while she arrived without high expectations of public recognition, her statistics justified her presence among the world's elite. Upon returning to Mexico, Corral addressed her career and past challenges, including periods where she felt undervalued. She expressed a desire to inspire young girls to pursue football without limits, stating that true competition lies abroad and that Mexican athletes should support one another rather than compete against each other.
