Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang Expressway construction

The construction of the 188km Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang Expressway in Vietnam is facing significant delays due to critical shortages of construction materials, specifically sand.

In late August, officials in Can Tho reported that Component Project 4 was experiencing a deficit of over 3.2 million cubic meters of sand, with supply rates meeting only about 10% of demand. Authorities indicated that contractors showing poor capacity might have their workloads reassigned. While land clearance and bridge construction were largely complete for Component Project 2, that section also faced shortages of stone and sand for embankment loading.

By early September, Component Project 4 was reported to be 25% behind its original schedule. Although a total supply of 6.5 million cubic meters of river and sea sand had been identified, the delivery speed remained insufficient to meet the project’s 7.269 million cubic meter requirement. To mitigate the remaining deficit of approximately 0.77 million cubic meters, Can Tho officials began coordinating with Vinh Long Province to access additional mines and accelerated licensing for new sites, such as Tan Loc and Phuoc Loc.
