Overview

Chega leader André Ventura has accused the Portuguese government of collecting an illegal tax through the road safety contribution. Ventura claims that despite European justice rulings, the PSD/CDS-PP executive continues to apply the tax, resulting in approximately 700 million euros in excess collections. Requests for parliamentary immunity for the deputies have been forwarded to the Public Ministry, with a vote expected by the Assembly of the Republic in September.

Recently, Ventura alleged that a fire at the Chega party’s regional headquarters in Évora was likely arson. While local police sources stated there are no immediate signs of arson, the party has filed a criminal complaint.

Regarding legislative matters, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has urged the Portuguese Parliament to revise legislative projects concerning gender identity presented by the PSD, Chega, and CDS-PP. Türk warned that requiring medical validation for legal gender changes might ‘pathologize’ gender identity. Chega has rejected this intervention, with Ventura stating the party will not withdraw its initiative, arguing that allowing children to change sex is unjustifiable.
