PM Modi inaugurates Chennai infrastructure projects

Overview

On October 11, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Chennai to inaugurate and lay foundation stones for development projects valued at over Rs 13,000 crore. These initiatives cover the transport, highway, railway, port, petroleum, and education sectors in Tamil Nadu.

A central component of the visit was the inauguration of the Poonamallee-Vadapalani stretch of the Chennai Metro Rail Phase II. This Rs 4,900 crore project includes a 15-km elevated corridor featuring 11 stations and a 3.7-km double-decker structure. Utilizing advanced signaling for driverless operations, the line aims to improve connectivity between western suburbs and the city center. Following the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay traveled together on the new service, which commenced partial operations on Sunday afternoon, with regular scheduled services set to begin on Monday.

Other major developments include National Highway projects worth approximately Rs 3,700 crore, railway infrastructure worth Rs 750 crore—including the redevelopment of five Amrit stations—and foundation stones for port projects at Chennai, Kamarajar, and V O Chidambaranar ports. Additionally, the Prime Minister dedicated the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre at IIT Madras to the nation, where he was briefed on neuroscience research such as high-resolution 3D human brain atlases.

During the visit, the Prime Minister also visited the Jalakandeswarar Temple, an act intended to emphasize the integration of India’s cultural heritage with modern scientific and infrastructural progress. He noted that these projects are designed to ease daily commutes, strengthen industrial growth, and create employment opportunities for the youth in the state. He further emphasized the importance of cooperative federalism, stating that the development of states forms the foundation for national growth.
