Chicago CTA Red Line homicide investigation

Overview

On September 7, 29-year-old Kyle Bickham died after being allegedly pushed from a moving Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Red Line train near the 69th Street station. Following an altercation involving three individuals, Bickham fell onto the tracks, struck an electrified third rail, and was hit by another train. While initial reports considered a potential jump, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the death a homicide.

Authorities have since charged three individuals in connection with the incident. A 15-year-old girl was previously arrested and charged with several felonies, including first-degree murder and aggravated battery to a transit employee.

As of September 23, 18-year-old Christian McBounds has been charged with five felony counts, including first-degree murder. Prosecutors allege that surveillance footage shows the group repeatedly punching Bickham during an altercation. It is further alleged that one male pulled the emergency lever to open the doors while the train was in motion, and that both the teenage girl and one of the males threw Bickham from the vehicle.

Additionally, 19-year-old Katlar Parchman has been charged with first-degree murder, multiple murder counts, aggravated battery of a transit employee, and mob action. Parchman has been ordered detained until trial. Bickham’s family, noting he was traveling home from a shift at an Amazon warehouse, has called for increased transit security.
