Chișinău 590th anniversary celebrations
Overview
Chișinău is celebrating its 590th anniversary and patron saint day (Hramul orașului) on October 14, 2026, marking the date of its first documentary attestation.
The Chisinau City Hall has organized a program of festivities beginning with a Holy Liturgy at the Nativity of the Lord Metropolitan Cathedral. Artistic programs are scheduled for both the Cathedral Square and the Great National Assembly Square, including a youth show, ‘Pearls – Children Sing the City’, and a retro music concert titled ‘Chișinău, Happy Birthday!’. Musical highlights include a folk-rock fusion performance titled ‘Hora Chișinăului’, featuring artists such as Zdob și Zdub, the Advahov Brothers, and Lupii lui Calancea. The anniversary also features thematic fairs for wine, honey, and local crafts, alongside an ‘Octoberfest 2026’ beer festival.
On the day of the celebration, President Maia Sandu issued a message calling for the development of a ‘European Chișinău,’ characterized by more green spaces, modern public transport, safe streets for pedestrians, and the protection of historical heritage. She urged residents to care for the capital as they would their own homes. Mayor Ion Ceban also participated in commemorative ceremonies, including laying flowers at the monument of Stephen the Great.
Due to the celebrations, significant traffic restrictions and public transport diversions for buses and trolleybuses are in effect in central Chișinău on October 13 and 14. Several central roads, including portions of Ștefan cel Mare și Sfânt boulevard, are closed to vehicles. Public transport is operating on a Sunday schedule with numerous route diversions and temporary lines established. Several Public Services Agency (ASP) branches and post offices in Chișinău, Briceni, Florești, Rezina, Vulcănești, and Bender suspended operations on October 14 in observance of the holiday.
