Child drowning incidents in Bihar rivers

Overview

In August 2026, several fatal drowning incidents involving children occurred during river bathing in the Indian state of Bihar.

On August 17, two separate incidents were reported. In the Patna district, four girls were swept away by strong currents in the Ganga River; two bodies were recovered while search operations continued for others. In the Katihar district, three children drowned in the Kamla River, with officials reporting that the victims were brought dead to a medical facility.

Later in the month, on August 28, a third incident occurred in the Bhagalpur district. Three girls, aged eight to 17, drowned at Margang Ghat while bathing during the Raksha Bandhan festival. Local residents and the State Disaster Relief Force (SDRF) assisted in the recovery efforts.
