Child fatalities in Indian borewell accidents

Overview

Recent incidents in India have resulted in the deaths of children following falls into deep, open borewells.

In Faridabad, Haryana, a three-year-old girl died after falling into an abandoned, uncovered borewell in Seehi village. A ten-hour multi-agency rescue operation involving the NDRF and SDRF faced difficulties due to the well's depth and the presence of water. Although the child was extracted, she was declared dead upon arrival at a hospital. The incident led to local criticism regarding the failure to secure abandoned municipal borewells.

In the Phalodi district of Rajasthan, a nine-year-old boy died following a 39-hour rescue attempt after falling into a borewell approximately 1,050 feet deep. Rescuers encountered technical obstructions, including a large stone lodged above the child that prevented the use of monitoring equipment. Following his extraction, the boy was pronounced dead at a hospital.
