Child homicide investigation in Bath Settlement

Overview

The body of six-year-old Orlando Jaikarran was discovered in the Sea Dam Canal at Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, following reports of his disappearance. Senior Superintendent Lonsdale Whithrite of the Region Five Regional Command confirmed the discovery of the child’s remains.

Bharrat Jaikarran, the child’s father and a 45-year-old cane harvester, was taken into police custody after reportedly providing information that led investigators to the body and allegedly confessing to the killing. Subsequent reports indicate that the victim's body was partially decomposed and had suffered severe injuries, including the loss of the child’s head, part of his left hand, and his right foot. Authorities seized several cutlasses during the investigation which may have been used in the crime.

Bharrat Jaikarran has been remanded to prison following charges at the Weldaad Magistrate’s Court. During a hearing, Magistrate Shareefah Parks remanded him until November 12, and the matter has been transferred to the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s Court. Investigations continue as authorities look into the potential involvement of another suspect. The community of Bath Settlement recently held a funeral for the child, a Grade One pupil at Bath Primary School, amid widespread national mourning.
