Child pregnancy rates in Guatemala
Overview
In Guatemala, the Observatorio en Salud Sexual y Reproductiva (OSAR) reported 1,294 pregnancies among girls aged 10 to 14 between January and July 2026. Data from the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (MSPAS) indicates that the majority of these cases involve 14-year-olds (941 cases), followed by 13-year-olds (291 cases).
The demographic breakdown shows nearly equal distribution between indigenous girls (634 cases) and non-indigenous girls (622 cases). Geographically, the highest concentrations were identified in Huehuetenango, Alta Verapaz, Quiché, and Petén.
OSAR has linked these figures to poverty, social vulnerability, and restricted access to health and protection services. Because Guatemalan law classifies sexual relations with minors under 14 as rape, the data has raised significant concerns regarding sexual violence and the violation of children's rights.
