Child trafficking investigation in Arunachal Pradesh

Overview

In late August 2026, Namsai Police rescued 19 children from a suspected trafficking network across various locations in Arunachal Pradesh, including Itanagar and Pasighat. Authorities arrested three individuals for allegedly facilitating the movement of minors, many under eight years old, by promising education to vulnerable families before placing them as domestic or service workers. A Special Investigation Team was formed to examine financial and digital evidence.

By early September, the investigation expanded, resulting in the rescue of an additional 34 children and four other individuals. These victims were recovered from locations within Arunachal Pradesh and parts of Assam. Four facilitators have been arrested to date, including Rupali Padung, who is suspected of involvement in transportation and illegal placement. Law enforcement continues to investigate secondary links and question guardians, while the Child Welfare Committee and District Child Protection Unit provide rehabilitation for the rescued children.
